How Does Relay Works

The Relay device works with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi. So, you can communicate with your child across the street or even across the country. You can also use it as a walkie-talkie. All you need to do is press and hold the Talk button (center button of the Relay device) while speaking to your child. Release the button to get the reply from your child. The communication can be between two Relay devices or between a Relay device and a smartphone using the Relay app. With real-time GPS tracking, you can track your child quickly. Apart from tracking, you can add fun or create channels to your child's Relay.

Relay By Republic App

The Relay Kids GPS app is used to talk, track, and protect your loved ones. It keeps you connected with all your Relay devices. Using this app, you can see real-time location and track the location history from your smartphone. The Relay app is available for Android and iOS devices and so you can download it from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

For iOS

  • To download the Relay app on your iPhone, open the App Store.
  • Tap the search field and enter Relay by Republic.
  • From the search result, select the Relay app and tap the Get or Install  button to download the app.
  • Once the download is done, launch the app and sign in to your Relay account.
  • If you do not have an account, create a new account and activate your GPS tracker by following the on-screen instructions.

For Android

  • To download the Relay app on your Android phone, open the Google Play Store.
  • Search for the Relay by Republic app and tap it in the search result.
  • Next, tap the Install button and wait for the download to complete.
  • Tap Open to launch the app.
  • Give permission to access your contacts, storage, and other media.
  • If prompted, sign in to your Relay account (if you already have one).
  • Otherwise, create a new account and follow the on-screen prompts to activate your Relay Kids tracker.

How To Activate Your Relay Kids GPS?

Activating the Relay Kids tracker using the Relay by Republic app:

  • On your smartphone, download and install the Relay app.
  • Launch the app and create a new account with your name, email address, password, phone number, and billing information.
  • In case you already have an account, sign in to your current account with the login credentials.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to power on your Relay.
  • Tap Next in the Relay app and tap on the Relay Device you wish to activate.
  • Next, tap the Connect to Wi-Fi button at the bottom and select your wireless network name.
  • Enter the network key in the text field and tap Connect.
  • Now, press the Talk button three times in a row on your Relay to get the activation code.
  • In the Relay app, enter the activation code and tap Next.
  • Finish the rest of the on-screen instructions and complete the activation process.

How To Enable Gps Tracking For Each Relay? 

  • Remember that only account owners can enable GPS tracking.
  • On your smartphone, open the Relay Kids GPS app and tap on a Relay device icon below Direct Chats.
  • Go to the Settings tab and toggle on the Location button.
  • After reviewing the Privacy Notice, tap the OK button.
  • Tap on the Relay device icon at the top to exit the settings window.
  • You have now enabled GPS tracking for all the Relay devices.

How To Create A Geofence In Relay App?

  • Make sure that only account owners can create or edit Geofences for the Relay devices.
  • Before you begin, enable location for the Relay device using the Relay app.
  • On the home screen of the Relay app, go to Settings and then tap on Geofences below the Location section.
  • Next, tap on Add a new Geofence.
  • Search for the address to place the Geofence.
  • Choose the radius range and tap the Save new Geofence button.
  • Enter a name for your Geofence and tap Save to complete the setup.
  • You have now created Geofence for your Relay device using the Relay app.

How To Enable SOS And 911 Escalations On Relay

  • Start by launching the Relay app on your smartphone.
  • Tap on the Relay under the Direct Chats tab and select Relay SOS.
  • You can now see a green banner.
  • Tap the arrow icon in the green banner and you will be taken to the Relay SOS Overview screen.
  • Accept the Relay Kids GPS tracker SOS terms and conditions.
  • If prompted, provide your name, phone number, and default address.
  • Tap Next and create a Relay SOS contact.
  • On the SOS Notification Setup screen, tap the Enable Relay SOS notifications button.
  • Once you have enabled Relay SOS notifications, you are ready to receive a specialized notification.
  • When the Relay device initiates an SOS alert, you will receive notifications even when the Do not disturb mode is enabled.
  • Once the Relay SOS contact has been saved to your smartphone, enable the Relay SOS feature on your Relay device.
  • When you are asked to test an SOS emergency, tap the interactive Relay on the screen five times or tap Skip.
  • You have now enabled Relay SOS with 911 escalation for your Relay device.

How To Use Direct Chats With The Relay App

Using Direct Chats, you can talk to other Relay members. The Direct Chat option provides a 1-1 communication with your account members within the Relay app. These chats are established automatically between each Relay device and each app user. In short, Direct Chats in the Relay app allows you to send or receive a message.

Steps to send a message using Direct Chats:

  • Launch the Relay app on your smartphone and go to the Direct Chats list.
  • Tap the icon of the Relay Kids GPS device to which you wish to send a message.
  • Press and hold down the Talk button (microphone icon) to record your message.
  • Release the button to send your message.

Steps to receive a message using Direct Chats:

  • Launch the Relay app and go to the Direct Chats list.
  • Select the Relay device from which you wish to receive the message.
  • In case you are communicating to other relay devices in the Direct Chats, while you receive a new message, then you will get to see a missed message notification. You can listen to it anytime later.
  • Tap on the Relay device from which you received the notification.
  • Tap on Play to listen to the missed message.

How To Connect A Relay To Wifi

  • You can connect your Relay to Wi-Fi through the Relay app on your smartphone.
  • To begin with, turn on your Relay device.
  • On your smartphone, open the Relay app and sign in to your account.
  • Select your Relay Kids GPS tracker device name from the displayed list and tap the Connect to Wi-Fi button.
  • Choose your wireless network name and enter the network key.
  • Tap Connect and check if your device has been connected to the wireless network.

Buttons And Lights On Your Relay

Relay has three buttons and an LED ring with different colors for different messages.

Talk button:

The Talk button is used to convey a message or talk with your parent. You can do so by pressing and holding down the Talk button. Pressing the Talk button five times will activate an SOS alert. You can check the battery life of the Relay device by quickly pressing the Talk button.

Power button:

To turn on/off your Relay, press and hold down the Power button. Quick press the Power button to cycle through the chats and enabled channels on your device. To play any missed messages, press the Power button once.

Volume/Assistant button:

Quick pressing this button, you can increase the Relay Kids GPS volume and the LED ring will indicate the volume level in a circular pattern. To use Relay Assistant, press and hold down the Volume/Assistant button.

  • The LED ring indicates a new message through different color patterns.
  • When you activate your Relay, the LED ring appears to be a circular rainbow.
  • When you increase or decrease volume, the LED ring turns white.
  • While talking, the LED ring turns solid white.
  • Your Relay will flash green when you miss a message.
  • The partial light represents the battery percentage when you quick press the Talk button.
  • The LED ring will flash a red light when the battery life is less than 20%.
  • When your Relay is charging, the LED ring turns solid green, indicating that your device is powered on. If the device is powered off while charging, the LED ring turns solid red.

How To Factory Reset Relay Kids GPS?

  • Restoring your Relay GPS tracker will restore all the data to factory defaults except the latest firmware/ROM. 
  • Hold the Relay device in your hand and locate the Power and Volume buttons.
  • Next, press and hold down the Power and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until you hear a voice prompt.
  • Now, press the Talk button while holding down the other two buttons.
  • Release all three buttons when the device prompts a message.
  • Once the reset is done, you can see a spinning white LED. 
  • Listen for the activation prompts and complete configuring your device.

Relay Kids Gps Troubleshooting

If your Relay Kids tracker is not responding, you should troubleshoot the device to continue using it for tracking. In case you are stuck while troubleshooting your Relay device, contact our technical experts to help you resolve the issues.

Bluetooth Or Wifi Issues During Relay Activation 

  • If your Relay app fails to detect your Relay device via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, tap Skip at the top-right corner to activate your device over the cellular network.
  • In case you cannot find the Skip option, open the Settings app on your smartphone and turn off Bluetooth.
  • Return to the Relay app and tap Skip to proceed with the Relay activation over the cellular network.
  • If you cannot activate your Relay, power it off and remove the SIM card from the slot using the SIM card ejector tool.
  • Place the SIM card properly into the SIM card tray and refix the tray into the Relay.
  • Reactivate your device using the Relay app and check if the problem has been resolved.

Receiving Error Code Rel-0412 In Relay 

  • If you are getting the error code REL-0412 in the Relay Kids GPS tracker, try these troubleshooting steps.
  • Usually, this error occurs when the SIM card in the Relay has not been properly pre-warmed in the system.
  • You should reactivate the SIM to resolve the REL-0412 error.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • First, turn off your Relay device and insert a SIM removal tool into the hole on the side of the device. This will eject the SIM card tray.
  • Next, pull out the SIM card tray from the Relay Kids GPS and remove the SIM card.
  • Place the SIM card back into the tray and push it completely into the device.
  • Now, turn on your Relay device and check if it is working fine.

You can use the Do Not Disturb mode to put your Relay in a state where unwanted audio cues, messages, and accidental button presses will no longer be a concern.

To enable the Do Not Disturb mode on your Relay, press the Power/Volume Up and Volume Down buttons simultaneously. You can see the flashing white light of the LED ring. Also, you will hear a voice prompt stating that your Relay has enabled the Do Not Disturb mode.

  • Start by launching the Relay app on your smartphone.
  • Tap the Settings icon at the bottom-right corner.
  • Select Change Name and tap Continue after reviewing the warning message.
  • Input your new profile name and tap Save.
  • You have now changed the name of your Relay Kids GPS app profile.
